Visiting the monastery
A tour of the Abbey Basilica, Museum and Library will provide insights into the exciting and turbulent history of the Augustinian Canons’ Monastery that is more than 875 years old, and active to this very day. The Abbey’s development over the course of the centuries is copiously illustrated by the various structures and works of art. A tour of the Monastery resembles a walk through the essential eras of art history; the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo eras have all left their traces in Neustift. Particularly worth seeing: the colorful and light-suffused Basilica in the style of the Southern German late baroque, which beckons visitors to linger and pray silently, as well as the cloister that is richly decorated with frescoes. The Museum displays numerous panel paintings and wing altars created by the most famous Tyrolean artists of their time, among them Friedrich Pacher and Marx Reichlich, precious manuscripts, liturgical treasures, as well as scientific equipment and historical instruments. And finally, the Monastery library with its roughly 98,000 volumes and its great hall in the style of the Rococo represents an absolute jewel.
