The blessed Hartmann’s surplice

An attempt at reconstruction

Until 1950 a High Medieval surplice, a priestly vestment that was allegedly worn by the abbey’s founder Hartmann of Brixen, was kept in Neustift. It was the only such vestment ever to have been preserved from the European Middle Ages. Unfortunately only a small fragment of the surplice now remains.

It was however well documented by a detailed description, several photos and measurements. On the basis of these it was reconstructed in spring 2022 and is now kept on display in the museum.
