1142
The founding of the Abbey
NEUSTIFT WAS FOUNDED BY THE BLESSED HARTMANN, BISHOP OF BRIXEN
Fate played a hand in the origination of Neustift Abbey. After the death of their son, Burgrave von Säben and his wife donated land and farms, including a number of vineyards. The wine tradition is thus as old as Neustift itself.

1630
NEW VINEYARDS FOR THE ABBEY
A FIRST STEP IN THE DIRECTION OF QUALITY
Because the harsh climate of Eisacktal did not provide the right conditions for red wine grapes (and probably also resulted in sour wines), in around 1630 Neustift acquired several vineyards south-west of Bozen and built the farm of Mariaheim. It was the monastery’s first step in the direction of quality wines.

NEW VARIETIES, BETTER WINE
THE ADVENT OF SYLVANER AND BURGUNDER
After winegrowers in the area had boldly led the way, in around 1900 Neustift Abbey also started planting white wine varieties already established in Austria and Rhineland. Since then our customers have been enjoying Sylvaner or Weißburg instead of Blatterle, Ortlieber or Elbling.

1938
ACQUISITION OF THE MARKLHOF
A NEW BASIS FOR NEUSTIFT’S RED WINES
Because Bozen was growing and growing, the Neustift vineyards were getting smaller and smaller. The abbey found a replacement in Girlan, where it bought the Marklhof – and with it ideal locations for Blauburgunder and Vernatsch.

FOUNDING OF THE WPG
AN ASSOCIATION OF 60 SUPPLIERS
The Weiproduzentengenossenschaft Neustift-Brixen und Umgebung (Wine producers’ association of Neustift-Brixen and district) was founded in 1961, and in 1962 the around 60 members began supplying Neustift Abbey with grapes. An arrangement that continues today, and is obviously still profitable for both parties.

CO2 NEUTRALITY AT NEUSTIFT
PRESERVING GOD’S CREATION
Preserving God’s creation is a basic tenet of Neustift Abbey. For this reason there has been a consistent changeover to renewable forms of energy for heating, so that Neustift Abbey became one of the first enterprises to achieve CO2 neutrality.

1997
THE FIRST PRAEPOSITUS
A SPECIAL LINE FOR THE BEST WINES
In 1997 the premium line of Neustift Abbey’s winery was given the name Praepositus. In Latin this means provost and in Neustift it initially stood for the best Blauburgunder and Lagrein wines. Gradually white wines were also included in the assortment.

1998
A NEW WINERY
NEW BUILDING, NEW MANAGEMENT
Because the winery was bursting at the seams, it was moved into the former cowshed and stables north-west of the monastery. In addition, Celestino Lucin was appointed cellarer and put his stamp on Neustift’s winery.

2016
THE EVER-EXPANDING WINERY
VINEYARDS ABOVE, WINE CELLAR BELOW
Because the demands on production and quality were increasing, in 2016 it was decided to expand the winery. To preserve the monastery’s architectural ensemble, an unusual step was taken: the new rooms were put underground – appropriately under a vineyard.

Launch of single-site wines
The first two single-vineyard wines in the abbeys centuries-old history were launched. The grapes come from very special vineyards in Novacella and Marklhof in Cornaiano. Their names: Stiftsgarten Sylvaner and Vigna Oberhof Pinot Nero Riserva.
